Reflection

In this mini lesson, I taught a 1st grade class at Madison Elementary School. I found that this 1st grade class really enjoyed the story telling aspect of the lesson and always wanted to guess what I would “see” next down by the bay. Each verse was mostly repetitive, only changing one line, so I took time to introduce the new words to the students. As I progress through the lesson I noticed that the students were less energetic and engaged the longer I went on. In retrospect, it was because the students had already picked up on the pattern of the song and didn’t need me to introduce each lyric change in the verse. In future lessons, I will adjust my speed according to responses from the students, moving faster and combining steps if they understand the activity well, or slowing and clarifying if they don’t. Overall, this lesson is straight forward and very fun for young elementary students.
